Twenty Three Degrees Below Zero

Temps here tonight are outrageously cold!  According to the local weather net

     http://www.estesparkweather.net/index.php

it is twenty-three below zero right now (11:55pm) and they are forecasting an overnight low of -31 degrees.  That's actual temperature, not wind chill!  Kind of exciting and great fun for this Michigan boy.  After watching a meteorologist on television throw hot water into the air to see it turn into snow before hitting the ground, Karen and I decided to try it out.  See the video below for the result.

I'm loving this cold snap!  Wouldn't want to have these temps hang around for more than a few days, but it sure is fun for now.  This morning I was out in six-to-eight below zero temperatures for my fifteen mile "Park Loop" training run.  I was quite comfortable, even a bit on the warm side, and enjoyed the weak sunshine and lack of wind.  Before heading out, I replaced the worn out screws on my screw shoes (see picture below).  I never slipped or slid a single time in spite of the icy, snow packed roads.  If you haven't tried this, give it a shot.  Use 3/8th inch #8 hex-head screws.  And no, you don't need to put in nearly as many as I do on my shoes (I tend to get carried away). Hey, I much prefer cold weather over hot for running.

Karen and I also had a great time downhill skiing last week at Eldora.  Between running, skiing, snowshoeing, and throwing boiling water into the air, this is turning out to be a really fun winter!

Taking a lunch break on a snowshoe trek to Bierstadt Lake.
